Round 2

Jill has come out of the surgery like we all knew she would. Pissed off like an angry hornet! She is in the kind of pain that only those who experience back to back brain surgeries can understand. I'm going out on a limb with this statement, but I think that childbirth is nothing compared to this (that should spark some comments). She is never wanting to go through with that ever again. Nobody wants to go through with that once, let alone twice. She didn't experience any signs of expressive aphasia when it comes to her thoughts on brain surgery.

Dr. Zimmerman was able to remove about 80% of the tumor and excersized consersivative restraint in order to preserve her quality of life (speech, motor skills, etc.) Portions of the tumor removed appeared to be more aggressive than those that were removed during Round 1 and have been sent to Mayo Clinic Rochester for further pathology analysis.

Jill will begin speech therapy tomorrow and will have the 30+ staples removed in 10 days. The length of her stay in the hospital is unknown and further treatment will be determined after the pathology results.

I'm exhausted, but not nearly as much as Jill is. She is a trooper!

  1. An angry Jill is a great sign. Passive acceptance would have me worried. I see in this picture Jill was upgraded from the tricycle. I bet they took the training wheels off for the photo. You're my hero Jill. Hang in there.

  5. Gads. Keep hanging in there. So glad to hear this leg of it went as well as it could. No one could blame either one of you for being pissed off at this point. Need anything sent down? Leo still got babysitters?

  6. Thanks for the update Rob. And yeah- as a person who's gone through natural child birth twice, I'd prefer that to brain surgery any day! And after all the end result of Jill's surgery is removal of a tumor, not a baby. Blech!
I'm glad it went well. We're thinking of you both all the time.

  9. Jill and Rob, I am so relieved to read the surgery is over. I can just hear you swearing up a storm, Jill! I hope you are both getting some much needed rest and that you remain optimistic during recovery and the next phase of waiting. Love, Amparo

  10. Jill:
As I mentioned in my first post, some articles I 've seen indicate that drawing pictures of you fighting off the tumor may help in your recovery process. Well, since I am retired and have plenty of time to peruse both newspapers and the internet, I found an article that reports on a clinical study indicating that cursing, especially for women, can often lead to a feeling of euphoria and well being. Try it; it couldn't hurt!!!!

  11. I thought I heard some crazy woman cursing and breathing fire sometime yesterday evening... I thought it was just one of the locals here, but now it all makes sense. Funny how fast sound travels! Well, Jill, I hope you're feeling a little better today after giving birth to an avocado- even if it was piece by piece. Keep that fighting spirit up, Jillio (and Robbio). You're gonna be all better soon. That picture above wouldn't happen to be from Fat Tire Fest, now would it? Funny how Jill is the only one on this side of the fence-- almost as if this angry young hornet was being locked in for everyone else's protection! Thinking about you guys, and lovin' ya all the way from Eugene.

  12. Jilly Most and CMF,
As if you didn't know how already amazing you two are! To my bafflement, and to those in the ultrarunning community who shudder at the thought, you will be even stronger when this is all said and done. Jilly, with your dogged determination and your mad OCD (to put it mildly) organizational skills, you will be schoolin' the speech PT. Sending love, strength, ice cream and all those positive vibes your way!
    Con paz,
    Alexis

  13. Jill and Rob: Well, guess being pissed off is a good sign -- of life and fighting attitude. The medical folks should probably include that as part of their vital sign checks -- it's so easy to measure!
Keep up the good fight -- everyone is pulling for you both!
